Chaosium's BRP System

So, I've been looking at BRP's full manual recently and I was wondering if anybody has used it at any length. I've heard some good things about it, but I wanted to hear what you guys think, since you're good at finding bad flaws.

I sorta wanna run some stuff with it but fact is, I need to be able to emulate D&D style spells and shit. That's a big reason why I haven't tried running Burning Wheel.

I mean, the first magic section and psychic powers are kinda cool, since they have some flexibility, but they're not D&D. Stuff like; making undead, making things magically, etc. If I don't have that sort of thing it makes it hard for me to run much of my campaign ideas.

If BRP isn't what I want for an alternative, what are some recommendations for a simpler system with a similar magic feel?

Percentile is a problem if you want to play heroes and not normals. BRP is entirely percentile (with a few bits that aren't) and suffers the same problem.

Like almost every other "generic" system it tries to be all systems at once. None of the designers have ever written an API and thus all the points where "plugin" settings are supposed to connect feel crappy.

It's also seriously geared toward "realistic" expectations for people. Gun shots kill, for instance. Instead of gritty it just comes out as boring.

Never read the 2008 reboot of the BRP. The classic BRP feels very dated. It looks like something that was written in the early 80s because it was. The BRP has always been an albatross around Call of Cthulhu's neck, something that it is only ever fun in spite of.
